Tom Hanks-5-1024x767Hanks' next role was that of astronaut and commander Jim Lovell in the 1995 docudrama Apollo 13. This reunited him with Ron Howard. The film was generally praised by critics and also by the performance of the whole group (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris), and Kathleen Quinlan. The film also received nine Academy Award nominations, winning two. Hanks then acted as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animation film Toy Story (1995). He made his directorial debut a year later with The Thing You Do! (1996) which chronicles the decline and rise of a popular 1960s group. He also took on the role of a music producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and many critics agree that Hanks' performances earned him a place among the top romantic-comedy stars his generation.
